About Zoë Bakes Cakes

The expert baker and bestselling author behind ZoëBakes explores her favorite dessert—cakes!—with more than 100 recipes to create flavorful and beautiful layers, loaves, bundts, and more in her new book Zoë Bakes Cakes.

Cake is the ultimate symbol of celebration, used to mark birthdays, weddings, or even just a Tuesday night. Yet too many people use chemical-laden mixes even though a cake is so easy to make from scratch and infinitely more fun to share. In Zoë Bakes Cakes, bestselling author Zoë François demystifies the craft of cakes with more than 100 easy-to-use recipes, showing how to get gorgeous confections on the table to mark any occasion, big or small.

In the opening chapter, Zoë explores the techniques and tricks of cake baking, using step-by-step photos to break down baking fundamentals like creaming butter and sugar and whipping egg whites, making it easy to follow along. In the following chapters she gives simple, straightforward recipes for loaf cakes, layers, fillings, frostings, and more–including treats like Apple Cake with Honey-Bourbon Glaze, Lemon Curd Pound Cake, Coconut Candy Bar Cake, and Chocolate Devil’s Food Cake. There’s even a tutorial on how to make a wedding cake from scratch, complete with constructing the layers.

With Zoë’s encouragement, as well as her lighthearted approach, delicious homemade cake is within reach for any celebration imaginable.

Accolades for Zoë Bakes Cakes

“Even the most novice bake-o-phobe will be unable to resist flagging every page with a note that says “This one! This one for my birthday!” before handing it off to someone else in the house to tackle. Fans will be happy to get a little how-to on all the Zoë signatures: those distinctly graphic, cross-sectioned loaves and cupcakes with cloudlike piles of frostings and whipped cream; her spiky blowtorched (natch) meringues; cakes topped with fresh flowers or rimmed in fences made of candied carrots.” —The New York Times

“Zoë François’ newest cookbook, Zoë Bakes Cakes feels a bit like attending pastry school through a book. She skillfully shares her craft with simple and streamlined recipes, and the results are extravagant. From marbled pound cakes to fruit-drenched pavlovas to layer cakes sandwiching rich fillings wrapped in swirls of decadent frostings, François thoughtfully guides readers through nearly every style of cake one could want to bake. The step-by-step photographs showcase not only beautiful photography, but clear and precise explanations of technique, from the basics to more complicated methods. Prepare to bake some celebration- (and insta) worthy treats.” —Food & Wine Magazine

Are the recipes in grams or cups?

Both! I highly recommend you get a kitchen scale. I’ll show you how to use it—it’s easier and much more consistent.

How much experience do you need to bake from Zoë Bakes Cakes? Is the book for beginners/teenagers?

You don’t need any experience to bake from this cookbook. I will show you everything you need to know. There’s everything from banana bread to devil’s food. You’ll learn a lot. It would be a great book for teenagers dedicated to learning about baking. If you start at the beginning and go all the way through it, you’re going to be quite a cake baker.

What recipe should I make first?

This depends on your mood. Do you want chocolate? Do you want a white cake? Do you want something with plums in it? Do you want peanut butter? Do you want a wedding cake? Something for a birthday? Pound cake? Bundt cake? There is no one place to start—the book has it all!

What’s my favorite recipe in the book?

I have so many favorites! I love the plum cake, angel food, devil’s food, pavlova. I can’t really answer this because I truly love them all!

What are your top three cake making tools?

My top three kitchen tools for cakes are my stand mixer because it does so much of the work for me, really good cake pans can make a difference and a high-quality rubber spatula. See all my cake equipment recommendations here.
